Learnability and Markedness in Data-Driven Acquisition of Stress

چکیده
This paper investigates the computational grounding of learning theories developed within a metrical phonology approach to stress assignment. In current research, the Principles and Parameters approach to learning stress is pervasive. We point out some inherent problems associated with this approach in learning the stress system of a particular language by setting parameters (the case of Dutch), which is shown to be an inherently noisy problem. The paper focuses on two aspects of this problem: we empirically examine the eeect of input encodings on learnability, and we investigate the possibility of a data-oriented approach as an alternative to the principles and parameters approach. We show that data-oriented similarity-based machine learning techniques like Backpropagation Learning, Instance-Based Learning and Analogical Modeling working on phonemic input encodings (i) are able to learn metrical phonology abstractions based on concepts like syllable weight, (ii) that their performance can be related to various degrees of markedness of metrical phenomena, and (iii) that in addition, they are able to extract generalizations which cannot be expressed within the metrical framework without recourse to lexical marking. We also provide a quantitative comparison of the performance of the three algorithms investigated.

Count-mass Distinction in the Acquisition of English Articles by Persian Learners of English
Articles in general and definite articles in particular can create problems even long after all other aspects of English have been mastered. The present article investigated the learnability problems related to the acquisition of count-mass distinction of English nominals by Persian L2 learners. The theoretical underpinning of the study is the interpretability hypothesis (Tsimpli & Dimitrakopou...
متن کاملAcquisition of English Unergative and Unaccusative Structures by Persian EFL Learners
The acquisition of argument structures has been studied by a variety of second language acquisition scholars within the past two decades (Atay, 2010; Can, 2009; Chay, 2006, & Kras, 2007, among others). In the present study, ‘Predicate’ as the most substantial element of a sentence is investigated. There are three English verb-types which seem to be more problematic for Persian EFL learners: (a)...
متن کاملBiases in Harmonic Grammar: the road to restrictive learning
In the Optimality-Theoretic learnability and acquisition literature it has been proposed that certain classes of constraints must be biased toward particular rankings (e.g., Markedness >> IO-Faithfulness; Specific IO-Faithfulness >> General IO-Faithfulness). While sometimes difficult to implement efficiently or comprehensively, these biases are necessary to explain how learners acquire the most...
متن کاملTowards Unsupervised Ontology Learning from Data
Data-driven elicitation of ontologies from structured data is a well-recognized knowledge acquisition bottleneck. The development of efficient techniques for (semi-)automating this task is therefore practically vital — yet, hindered by the lack of robust theoretical foundations. In this paper, we study the problem of learning Description Logic TBoxes from interpretations, which naturally transl...
متن کاملStructure and Frequency in Verb Classification
In this paper, we investigate the linguistic relevance of the notion of frequency in theories of lexicon organisation, in particular the definition of verb classes. Traditionally, the subject matter of linguistics has been to develop linguistic representations to describe and explain language as a cognitive process, including language acquisition and language comprehension and production. Theor...
